Today Regional Plan Association and Tri-State Transportation Campaign released a series of neighborhood-specific fact sheets demonstrating the major benefits NYC public transit users will see if the MTA’s Fast Forward plan is fully funded.
The series of 19 fact sheets, created by RPA and TSTC, show planned benefits congestion pricing and full MTA funding will bring to specific neighborhoods throughout New York City, showing riders what to expect if the Governor and State Legislature enact congestion pricing—and what they’ll miss out on if their elected officials fail to act. With the governor’s inclusion of congestion pricing in his annual budget, the focus turns to the Legislature.
The fact sheets call congestion pricing “a realistic step we can take to reduce traffic, cut air pollution, and increase funding for public transportation.” Congestion pricing would charge drivers entering Manhattan below 60th Street at certain times, and use the revenue for citywide transit improvements.
In London, congestion pricing has improved transit, reduced traffic congestion by 15%, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 20%. In Stockholm, traffic congestion decreased by 22% and childhood asthma attacks dropped by 50% after congestion pricing started.
