Statement from Tom Wright, President and CEO, Regional Plan Association:
Regional Plan Association congratulates Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill on their victories. Together, they have an historic opportunity to address the intertwined and deeply regional challenges of housing, transit, energy, climate and equity.
RPA’s Fourth Regional Plan and recently released Planning Priorities for NJ and NY lay out opportunities to expand housing choice, improve mobility, address the threat of climate change, and create healthier, more prosperous communities. Mayor Mamdani and Governor Sherrill should work together – and with leaders across the tri-state metropolitan region – to build more housing; improve public transit and build the Gateway project; and bring down energy costs by building clean, renewable production, transmission and storage.
RPA looks forward to working closely with both administrations, community organizations and the private sector to deliver lasting solutions to the many challenges our city and region face.
Statement from Moses Gates, Vice President for Housing and Neighborhood Planning, Regional Plan Association Regarding the Ballot Proposals 2- 4:
In addition to the Mamdani mandate, by passing Charter Revision Proposals 2, 3 and 4 New Yorkers have voted YES to take real action to build the affordable housing we need. For years, families across NYC have faced the growing strain of rising rents, shrinking housing options. Yesterday, New Yorkers made themselves clear – it’s time to bring housing affordability to all of our neighborhoods for this generation and generations to come.
