A statement from Build Gateway Now Campaign Manager Brian Fritsch:
The Build Gateway Now Coalition applauds an incredible federal commitment to funding for the Hudson Tunnel Project, which will allow it to advance into the Federal Transit Administration’s Engineering Phase. This is one of the most significant steps forward for the Gateway Program to date and brings the Hudson Tunnel Project much closer to a Full Funding Grant Agreement. We applaud the dedicated cooperation between New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the Gateway Development Commission, Amtrak, and NJ Transit in reaching this milestone. RPA’s research demonstrates that once this project is completed, it is very likely ridership demand for this service will have surpassed pre-COVID levels. The pledge of $6.9 Billion in funding from the Federal Government guarantees construction on the Hudson Tunnel Project will begin on both sides of the river in 2023. By advancing into the Engineering Phase, the project moves from planning to reality, ensuring we will build the 21st-century transportation system that our environment needs, that our nation’s economy relies on, and that trans-Hudson riders deserve.
