Two million people in the New York metropolitan region, or 12%, live with a disability, which the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey defines it as difficulties with hearing, vision, cognitive, ambulatory, self-care or independent living.

Urban planning policies have a big impact on the lives of those living with disabilities. Safe streets, pedestrian crossings and accessible public transit are important to those who might face challenges with mobility.
