Two million people in the New York metropolitan region, or 12%, live with a disability, which the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey defines it as difficulties with hearing, vision, cognitive, ambulatory, self-care or independent living.
Urban planning policies have a big impact on the lives of those living with disabilities. Safe streets, pedestrian crossings and accessible public transit are important to those who might face challenges with mobility. This map shows the share of the adult population (18+) at the census tract level that live with disabilities.
