The Kingsland Wildflower Green Roof provides a number of benefits to the local community and the environment at large:
Preventing Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO): The green infrastructure of the Kingsland rooftop ultimately prevents CSO, or the discharge of sewage and stormwater from a combined sewer system into nearby water bodies during heavy rainfall or snowmelt. This can occur with just a quarter of an inch of rainfall in NYC, and in the case of Newtown Creek, means a release of sewage and rainwater into the creek and NY harbor.
Supporting an ecosystem: The green roof’s rain water retention system directly supports an ecosystem for native plants and pollinating bees who rely on the water to thrive.
Economic development: The green infrastructure of NCA aims to generate sustainable jobs by establishing a maritime and green workforce.
