New York City’s record job growth through July is the latest evidence that the city’s economic resurgence represents a fundamental transformation.
Over the last decade, 90% of the new jobs in the New York region have been in the five boroughs, a complete reversal from the previous 30 years when the city gained only 10% of the region’s jobs. Whether we sustain and broaden this prosperity to benefit all of the region’s residents depends on how we choose to invest in housing, infrastructure and neighborhoods. As argued in Charting a New Course, we could face a dramatic slowing of economic growth without substantially expanding these investments.
