On October 8, AIA New York celebrated recipients of the 2018 AIANY + ASLA-NY Transportation + Infrastructure Design Excellence Awards.
Two of the awardees were Regional Plan Association partners, producing images to help us explore and enliven ideas from our Fourth Regional Plan.
All of the winners deserve a big round of applause.
Read on to learn more about two award winning designs that RPA helped advise.
Nexus/EWR (Architect: Gensler; Project Team: Ahasic Aviation Advisors, LLC, Arup, Landrum and Brown)
This rendering was commissioned by RPA as part of our Fourth Regional Plan - specifically a recommendation to expand and redesign both Kennedy and Newark airports in order to accommodate more passengers and reduce delays. It shows a new intermodal “headhouse” that would would serve as the singular point of entry to Newark Airport and allow for passengers who commute by public transit to access all gates under one roof. The project was managed on the RPA side by our former Vice President of Transportation Rich Barone, and the designs were created by Gensler along with Ahasic Aviation Advisors, LLC, Arup, Landrum and Brownhe.
The Triboro Corridor (Architects: One Architecture & Urbanism (ONE); Only If)
RPA has long promoted the idea of the Triboro Line, a new connection between Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. ONE Architecture and Only.if, as part of RPA’s 4C special design initiative for the Fourth Regional Plan, joined forces and took it a step further to imagine what the surrounding neighborhoods could look like around the 24-mile transit line. By taking the existing right-of-way and adjacent spaces, The Triboro Corridor envisions a linear park and greenway along the proposed line to improve community health, a bike “superhighway” for commuter and recreational use, and welcome new models for economic growth and job generation.
We’d like to congratulate Gensler, One Architecture & Urbanism and Only.if and their partners for their incredible work on these projects, and their support of the Fourth Regional Plan!
