On June 12th, 2004, the Governors Island Alliance convened a community workshop on the future of park and recreation activities on the Island. Over 150 park activists, community representatives, design and park professionals spent the day discussing their ideas for what public spaces on the Island could be, with an emphasis on identifying what uses and activities would befit the Island’s unique character and harbor location. Guided by a pair of facilitators, each of the 12 small group discussions produced vision statements, lists of the most appropriate uses for the island, drawings of those uses arrayed on the island, and a bumper-sticker slogan that reflects the concept underlying each proposal.

This Workshop Findings document summarizes the findings from those discussions, as compiled and edited by Governors Island Alliance staff and consultants. Products from the workshop participants themselves are used as illustrations of the more general points made in the text.

This information is intended to provide an initial planning framework for the island’s parks and public spaces, identifying issues and opportunities and bringing to light salient design and programming principles for consideration by GIPEC, NPS, our elected representatives, and the public.
