Regional Plan Association was heartbroken to learn of the passing of New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell. A titan in New Jersey politics and an unwavering advocate for infrastructure, equity, and his beloved City of Paterson.
Congressman Pascrell understood that infrastructure is about so much more than physical structures. He knew that smart investment creates opportunities, fosters economic growth, and ensures the well-being of all people. His legacy is one of dedication and vision, and we are proud to have had the privilege of working with the Congressman on many issues over the years - most notably the inclusion of the Paterson Great Falls in the National Park system.
On a personal note, I worked with the Congressman and his staff for many years, both during my time as staff to Senators Lautenberg and Booker and as an infrastructure advocate. He was an inspirational force of nature and a firebrand who didn’t just make supportive noises, but really took the reins and championed the causes he believed in. He was straightforward in his delivery and let you know exactly where he stood, approaching every conversation and issue with his trademark candor and integrity.
He also never lost touch with who he was at heart - a scrappy kid from Paterson who fought for his home state. He always made time to meet with constituents and advocates, and his deep empathy for the people he served shone through all of his endeavors.
As we reflect on his decades of remarkable service, our heartfelt thoughts are with his family, colleagues, and everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.
