Here at RPA, we love learning about commutes, the access to opportunities they can offer and the ways people get around, especially on a regional scale.
Our latest favorite regional commuting data bite comes to us from City Lab and “Michigan-based data enthusiast Mark Evans.” Mark combined American Community Survey census tract data with some dataviz magic (documented here) to map how people commute between work and home throughout the various counties across the U.S.
The ACS Commuter Map snapshot above shows commuter flows for workers who work in New York’s Manhattan borough and live between 20 -100 miles away (estimated to be 85,633 people across 3,406 census tracts).
