Land-use, tax, and financing restrictions are preventing construction of the types of housing the region needs in order to bring down the high cost of living. To expand the number of affordable homes while creating healthier, more attractive, and energy-efficient neighborhoods, we need to lift arbitrary density limits in the urban core, allow multifamily homes in more suburban downtowns, end the warehousing of vacant land that could be used for development, and reform federal rules that inhibit mixed-use development.
