During the past 25 years, the New York Metropolitan Region has been the scene of the nation’s most extensive development of suburban branch stores. Since the late 1920s when the first of these branch stores were opened in the metropolitan area, more than 80 suburban branches have been established by “downtown” Manhattan, Brooklyn and Newark retail establishments.
