Residential construction in the Tri-State New York Metropolitan Region was substantially greater in both 1961 and 1962 than in any of the years of the past decade. Apartment construction accounts for all of the increase. Over the six-year period that NEW HOMES has been published, construction of one-family houses has remained stable, between 40,000 and 50,000 units a year, but multifamily units have increased steadily each year, from 27,690 in 1957 to 89,620 in 1962.
