Regional Plan Association and Global Strategy Group recently released results of our NY Metro Area Issues Survey which is taking the pulse of residents in the region and tracking perspectives as we begin to emerge from the pandemic. The poll, which surveyed 804 residents in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut metro area, is the latest in a series of polls and public engagement RPA has conducted in times of crisis over the course of our nearly 100-year history. Join us as we review the results of the public opinion polling and examine what they mean for our region going forward.
- The poll found large disparities in terms of gender and race. White men are much more satisfied with their quality of life and communities than others. For example, 80% of Black respondents would move from their community if they could compared to 43% of white respondents.
- The vast majority of New York metro area participants agree life has been difficult during the pandemic, and many were personally affected. About twice as many respondents of color lost family members to COVID compared to white respondents.
- The poll found strong support for investment in public transportation, more affordable housing, and policies to help the region adapt to climate change.
Detailed information on poll insights can be found here, including survey summaries on transportation, housing, and climate change.
