The growth of E-commerce is proving to be a long-lasting and profound change in the way goods are distributed in our region, which has consequential implications for how our communities and the infrastructure that supports and connects them are organized. E-commerce not only affects brick and mortar stores in commercial centers, but is also bringing about major changes in warehousing, employment, waste management, public finance and transportation.
With such a remarkable change underway, we are at an inflection point where decisions we make - or choose not to make - around these issues today will set us on a fixed path going forward. Without adequate and thoughtful planning, these trends have the potential for major unforeseen negative impacts on social, economic and environmental equity and sustainability in our urban centers, suburbs, exurbs, and rural communities.
This two-day symposium will convene leading practitioners and thinkers in the fields of supply chain management and transportation on day one, and land use, labor & public finance, and sustainable waste streams on day two. We will consider what the next 10 years might look like if current trends continue and how we might best plan for a future that embraces e-commerce in ways that foster a more healthy, equitable, sustainable and prosperous region.
