As the deepening climate crisis spurs on new policies, investments and action, the New York region has the opportunity to demonstrate how it can meet the promise of transitioning to a carbon-free economy. Moving away from fossil fuels will advance entirely new industries while adding to the ranks of existing ones. The development of offshore wind will require the training of a new workforce to manufacture, construct, and maintain turbines via an ecosystem of waterfront port facilities in communities across the region. Electrifying our buildings and autos will be carried out by skilled workers installing new systems and infrastructure from the curb to the kitchen. And our grid and its lines of transmission must be modernized and expanded by workers in all three states.
But are we prepared to realize the potential of this transition? Are all the right policies in place to advance decarbonization? Are utilities, cities, and states working in partnership to advance these goals? Do our workers have the right skills? Will these new jobs advance equitable opportunities for members of our marginalized communities?
Join us as we engage with a panel of speakers directly engaged in these questions, from the public utility side, to the energy developer, to the community, to labor. This event is made possible through the generous support from Con Edison and the Norwegian Consulate General in New York.
