DesegregateCT is a pro-homes coalition of neighbors and nonprofits, and is a program of RPA advocating for more equitable, affordable, and environmentally-sustainable land use policies in Connecticut, with a focus on expanding the diversity and supply of our housing stock. Formed in June 2020, in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd and the renewed conversation on racial justice, our work is about first imagining and then enacting a new vision for local and state land use policies that promotes racial, economic, and climate justice. Read more about our work in our Annual Reports.
The work of DesegregateCT focuses on three primary functions: educating the public through workshops, trainings, and issue briefs; researching current land use policies and measuring the positive impact of reforms; and organizing advocacy campaigns at the state and local levels, focusing on empowering local residents to speak for the kinds of changes they want to see.
Position Overview
We want a creative, hard working, and socially engaged intern to make sure our communications reach the widest possible audience in Connecticut and beyond as we fight to pass our transformative Work Live Ride proposal in the coming Connecticut General Assembly legislative session. You will be responsible for running our social media accounts on Twitter (for now!), Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok which includes designing posts and managing engagement, planning our monthly social media content calendar with other team members, tracking news articles about us and related work in CT and other states, and editing our weekly newsletter to our coalition members, and some occasional work on our webpage. It’s pretty simple - the more people that see our reports, videos, and events, the more power we’ll have to make the kinds of change we want in Connecticut. We want you to own this process.
Here’s what we’re looking for:
- An interest or background in social media strategy, including how to design an engagement strategy across multiple social platforms, how to manage a media calendar of content posting, and how to measure engagement
- The ability to work independently and flexibly and to turn around deliverables quickly and reliably
- An availability of 5-10 hours per week
- The availability to attend weekly evening Zoom meetings with our fun and nerdy team
- The hunger to see real economic, racial and social justice progress in Connecticut and the drive to be part of it
Nice to have, but OK if you don’t:
- A background or interest in housing, racial justice, or climate justice issues
- Some web design and graphic design experience
- Some familiarity with G-suite tools, Squarespace, Canva, MailChimp, and Slack.
How to Apply
This is a paid ($15-$20/hr) remote internship. Pay varies by experience. Open to young people across Connecticut. We strongly encourage young people from Fairfield County and young people with lived experience with housing insecurity to apply. This internship will commence in early 2023 and run through the end of May. Please send a brief cover letter and resume (and feel free to include an optional ~30s video explaining your interest) to info@desegregatect.org.
